Click SWF to play the example. Right-click
(or Control-click/Mac) FLA to
download the file and see the Timeline, etc.
Note: If you get a Missing Font Warning when you open the FLA in Flash, it's okay. Click the Use Default button, or select a font you like.
> Static text / URL link (01)
This example from Exercise 9.1 shows how linking text works by default. The target in this case is "_blank."
SWF :: FLA
> Static text / URL link (02)
This version of the previous example (01) shows one way to make sure that linked text is obvious to the user.
SWF :: FLA
> Static text / URL link (03)
This version shows another way to make sure that linked text is obvious to the user.
SWF :: FLA
> Device Fonts (04)
This set of five text fields illustrates differences between anti-aliased text and what Flash calls "device fonts."
SWF :: FLA
> Dynamic text (05)
In this exercise (9.2), you script a button to interact with a text field and
rewrite its contents, depending on how many times the user clicks the button.
There is only one frame in this movie. No movie clips are used. If the script
does not work, please see this special
note.
SWF :: FLA
> Dynamic text / ScrollBar for MX 2004 (06)
In this exercise (9.3), you learn how to apply the Flash MX UI Component called the ScrollBar to a Dynamic text field in Flash MX 2004. This example uses the Flash MX component for Flash MX 2004; the FLA cannot be opened in Flash MX.
SWF :: FLA
> Dynamic text / ScrollBar for MX (07)
In the same exercise (9.3), you learn how to apply the Flash UI Component called the ScrollBar to a Dynamic text field in Flash MX. This version works in Flash MX but not in Flash MX 2004.
SWF :: FLA
> BONUS Static text / Text that moves (08)
To make text move in Flash, all you have to do is Convert to Symbol. The rest you already know. This example uses a mask layer to hide and reveal the text in a simple looping movie.
SWF :: FLA
> BONUS Static text / Text that moves (09)
This example uses the text in a mask layer, moving across a photo with alpha at 100 percent. On a lower layer, the photo's alpha is set to 40 percent.
SWF :: FLA
> BONUS Static text / Text that moves (10)
You can put text into a movie clip if you need to use a lot of instances of the same text moving. For erratic-seeming movement, use a Motion Guide (it's more efficient than building the animation frame by frame and allows your moving object to follow curves on its path).
SWF :: FLA
> Input text (11)
In this exercise (9.4), you learn how Flash can "read" Input text as a user is typing it and how you can use ActionScript to do something with it.
SWF :: FLA
> BONUS Input text (12)
Use an Input text field and ActionScript to accept a login or password.
